Democrat Lawmaker Wins MA House Seat By 1 Vote After Recount

A recount on Thursday revealed that a first-time Democratic candidate narrowly defeated a long-serving Republican incumbent for a Massachuseets state representative seat by one vote.

As reported by The Boston Globe, Kristin Kassner defeated five-term Second Essex District state Rep. Lenny Mirra of Georgetown to lead the newly drawn district.

Kassner received 11,763 votes to Mirra’s 11,762 after Topsfield’s recount was completed.

Originally however, Republican Rep. Lenny Mirra won by 10 votes.

Ipswich Local News added these details:

he long, drawn-out election in the 2nd Essex District between Democrat Kristin Kassner and Republic Rep. Lenny Mirra just got … more long and drawn out.

Coming in to this week, Mirra was ahead by 10 votes (of 23,498 cast) in the newly formed 2nd Essex. In the recount, Kassner picked up 11 extra votes, meaning she is ahead by just one vote.

“Indeed, every single vote matters!” Kassner said in a statement. She sent “many thanks to all the supporters, town clerks, and volunteers who helped see this democratic process through.”
